You're not getting any drone-based killstreaks, after all. And while World War 1 is less familiar to gamers than World War 2, some of those basic concepts should still apply. It calls to mind, of course, Battlefield 1, which took a trip a bit further back in time to make the surprisingly successful World War 1 shooter, utilizing the less-advanced guns and vehicles of the time to create a chaotic, disorienting experience that felt a world away from the precision offered by most modern shooters. Since then Call of Duty: Vanguard came out in 2021 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 came out in 2022. The Beta will be available to download for free for all other players starting October 17 at 10 a.m. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War came out in 2020. PDT for digital pre-order customers and will unlock the Beta to play on October 15 at 10 a.m. I'll probably still spend my time getting blown apart, of course. Beta pre-load starts on October 13 at 8 a.m. Call of Duty will always be a twitchy game, of course, but I'm hoping that the return to slightly less absurd technology will slow the pace of things down just enough to start re-emphasizing tactics over reflexes. Those things are fun, of course, but they have a way of raising the skill ceiling and rewarding players with the sort of speed and reflexes I'm just never going to bring to the table: new game modes including the more linear, situation-based "War" should also make things interesting. For players like me, the combat might be a welcome change from multiplayer modes increasingly defined by futuristic abilities and fantastical weapons.
